Squirrels are common sight in the UK so when I was walking alongside West Lake in Hangzhou and saw a crowd gathered around a tree taking pictures of a squirrel I assumed there was something I was missing. But every time I was in the area it seemed to be a common sight. After asking around it became clear that most people have never even seen a squirrel. After looking online I found out that the West lake squirrels had become famous and were even trending on social media site Weibo under the hashtag #西湖边小松鼠被喂成胖子 which can be roughly translated as ‘fat little West lake squirrels’. There was even a short video on BBC News so I guess I’m a little late to the party.
